We’re watching Jackson’s restored video footage from the night of the full moon. He wakes up with glowing eyeballs, then does some popping and locking as he transforms into a lizard monster. Then he screeches and runs out.
Danny texts Jackson that his video’s finished restoring and he didn’t watch it. Danny leaves the tablet in the boot of his car.
Allison drives Lydia home and asks her not to say anything about what happened at Scott’s house. Lydia still doesn’t understand what happened because no one is filling her in on the murderous supernatural monsters running around.
LYDIA: How about you start with why was Derek there? Or where Jackson went or what is wrong with Erica? Do you need a minute to come up with a plausible lie?
Allison ignores all the hard questions and makes it all about how she and Scott are FORBIDDEN LOVERS.
ALLISON: Remember what it feels like. All of those times in school when you see him standing down the hall and you cannot breathe until you’re with him. Or those times in class when you can’t stop looking at the clock because you know he’s right out there waiting for you. Don’t you remember what that’s like?
ALLISON: What do you mean ‘no’? You’ve had boyfriends.
LYDIA: Not like that.
Derek is facing off with the Kanima under a bridge. Stiles and Scott rock up in the Jeep and narrowly miss some tyre spikes. Scott jumps out of the car to go join the parkour/dance battle under the bridge. Derek uses a discarded car door as a shield and he and the Kanima roar at each other.
They’re interrupted when the WEREWOLF HUNTERS show up, blinding everyone with their headlights. Chris shoots a round of bullets into the Kanima’s chest. Derek has disappeared. Chris is out of bullets and the Kanima was only pretending to be dead. It kicks him in the chest and he falls to the ground.
The Kanima goes over to Gerard, who stands there doing nothing. Then Scott arrives and crash-tackles the Kanima. He looks back at Gerard briefly before chasing after the Kanima.
Scott ends up near a club and Stiles joins him. Apparently the Kanima doesn’t have a scent so it can’t be tracked. But it is going to kill someone.
STILES: That explains the claws and the fangs and all that. Good. Makes perfect sense now. What? Scott, come on. I’m 147 pounds of pale skin and fragile bone, okay? Sarcasm is my only defence
SCOTT: Just help me find it.
STILES: Not ‘it’. Jackson.
They still can’t work out why Jackson passed Derek’s venom test if he’s the Kanima.
STILES: Derek said that a snake can’t be poisoned by its own venom, right? When’s the Kanima not the Kanima?
SCOTT: When it’s Jackson.
Stiles spots the Kanima climbing through one of the club’s upstairs windows. Scott spots Danny entering the club and realises the Kanima must be going to kill him.
Scott and Stiles break in through the back door of the club (Scott has, since episode 7 of last season, realised that he can rip handles off doors to save time). There is an abundance of SHIRTLESS men in the club and I’m not keeping tally. Assume that about a third of the dudes in here are SHIRTLESS, okay?
SCOTT: Dude, everyone here is a dude. I think we’re in a gay club.
STILES: Man, nothing gets past those keen werewolf senses, huh, Scott?
Danny’s still reeling over a recent break-up and the bartender points him in the direction of a better-looking and more SHIRTLESS guy than his ex.
Scott and Stiles go up to the bar and Stiles is miffed when someone pays for Scott’s drink and not his. Stiles spots Danny on the dance floor and Scott spots Jackson/the Kanima crawling along the ceiling right above Danny.
Lydia lets her dog, Prada, out to do his business. Prada takes a while and Lydia goes to investigate. Her back gate is open and Prada is brought back by that DUDEBRO from the counsellor’s office (he still doesn’t have a name yet. Henceforth referred to as Dudebro).
At the club, Stiles tries to get to Danny through the crowd. Scott tries to get to the Kanima with his claws. A smoke machine goes off and everything is obscured, allowing the Kanima to take down a bunch of people quickly.
Derek shows up in Alpha mode (be stealth, man) and slices the Kanima’s throat.
The smoke suddenly clears and everyone freaks when they see the paralysed guys on the dance floor. Scott goes out the back and follows the trail of blood left by the Kanima. He finds Jackson on the ground of the parking lot. He’s bleeding all over the place. Stiles catches up and neither of them know what to do with the NAKED and unconscious Jackson.
Back at the Martin house, Lydia determines that Dudebro is probably not a rapist (he lives in the house behind hers and heard Prada barking). He asks her if she’s okay.
LYDIA: I’m not crazy. I may be the girl who sleepwalks naked and writes backwards on the chalkboard but at least I’m not one of those desperate Vicodin-popping wrist-cutters at school.
Dudebro steps forward and Lydia steps back. If he tries to kiss her again, Lydia will punch him in the throat.
Instead of trying the kiss again, Dudebro gives Lydia a flower from her own climbing wall and asks her to keep it. If he asks her tomorrow ifs he has it and Lydia says no, he’ll be really hurt.
LYDIA: Well, if I don’t, I’ll lie.
She walks back inside.
Ambulances have arrived at the club and Danny is being carted into one. Scott checks that he’s okay. Danny’s fine as long as his ex is paralysed as well.
Scott jumps back in the Jeep with Stiles. Jackson is lying in the backseat, covered with a blanket. Sheriff drives up just as the boys are trying to leave. Scott tells Stiles to get rid of him.
STILES: Get rid of him? We’re at a crime scene and he’s the Sheriff.
SCOTT: Do something!
Jackson is starting to wake up, apparently healed and free from blood. Scott tries to subdue him so he doesn’t go into Kanima mode. He ends up punching him in the face to knock him out.
Stiles goes to chat with his dad, who wants to know why Stiles was at a gay club.
STILES: Well, Dad, there’s a conversation that we—
SHERIFF: You’re not gay.
STILES: I could be.
SHERIFF: Not dressed like that.
Sheriff is sick of Stiles showing up at crime scenes and lying to him. Stiles says that he and Scott were here with Danny. They were trying to take his mind off things after his break-up. Because Stiles looks so sincere and Sheriff knows he’s a good kid, he believes him.
Scott and Stiles get to drive away without anyone noticing Jackson in the backseat.
As they drive away, we see Chris Argent walking back to a truck parked in the shadows. He tells Gerard what he’s learned; apparently everyone is saying that it was an overdose of hallucinogenic drugs, since witnesses apparently saw a demonic monster on the dance floor.
Chris doesn’t understand how Gerard stood still while the Kanima circled him. Gerard puts it down to intuition. He thinks he might know what they’re up against.
GERARD: If I’m right, it plays by certain rules. Rules that don’t bend easily.
Gerard takes some more foreshadowing pills. Chris asks if they need to chase down Derek. Gerard is more interested in letting the Kanima take out Derek.
Scott and Stiles try to figure out where they can store Jackson until they figure out what to do with him/can convince him he’s dangerous.
STILES: I’ve got an idea.
SCOTT: Does it involve breaking the law?
STILES: By now don’t you think that’s a given?
SCOTT: I was just trying to be optimistic.
STILES: Don’t bother.
The next day, Jackson wakes up, SHIRTLESS (he’s wearing pants now) and handcuffed, in a police transport vehicle.
He immediately starts shouting at Scott and Stiles, who are standing outside. They’ve parked in the Preserve so at least no one else will hear the yelling.
Stiles climbs into the transport vehicle to give Jackson a choice of sandwiches and tell him he’s going to stay in there until they can figure out how to stop him killing people. Stiles has been texting Jackson’s parents from his phone so they don’t think anything’s wrong. It’s a foolproof plan.
It’s not a foolproof plan. Jackson’s dad goes straight to the Sheriff.
MR WHITTEMORE: It reads: Stayed at a friend’s house last night. Everything fine. Love you.
Since finding out 11 years ago that he was adopted, Jackson has never said ‘I love you’ to his parents.
Allison and Gerard chat in Gerard’s office. Allison says she’s studying for a History test and Gerard turns it into a WEREWOLF HUNTER lesson and then an interrogation. Gerard had a call from the police about Jackson and wants to know if Allison knows anything about it.
Gerard puts his fingers on Allison’s pulse to see whether or not it races when he asks her questions.
Allison’s a rubbish liar but says her erratic pulse is because Gerard is scaring her. Gerard apologises and lets Allison go back to class.
On her way out of the office, Allison notices security cameras being installed around the school. She tries to warn Scott about Gerard and the cameras in class but is interrupted because Mama Argent is now the substitute teacher. The Argent infiltration of the school is complete.
Stiles tells Jackson about his Kanima appearance. Jackson says that if he does have a tail then he’d use it to strangle Stiles. Stiles tells Jackson about the people he’s killed and attacked, then asks about the night of the first full moon. Jackson tells him nothing happened.
After class, Mama Argent questions Allison about all the recent calls to ‘the odd one’ (meaning Stiles). Allison shrugs it off, saying that it’s part of her keeping an eye on Lydia since Stiles has had a crush on her forever.
Mama Argent sympathises with Allison’s relationship troubles but says that it makes her strong. She’s not going to spend high school praying for some boy to take her to senior prom. Allison wants to know if she can be strong and go to prom. Sure she can. Just not with Scott.
MAMA ARGENT: Remember, so long as you stay strong, we won’t have to kill a 16 year old boy.
Back at the Preserve, Stiles is still texting Jackson’s dad to keep up the charade. Allison arrives and tells him that Jackson’s parents went to the police; they know Jackson is missing. Stiles turns on the police radio to hear that the police are on their way to the Preserve. Stiles dials Jackson’s mother and throws the phone out the window as he and Allison drive away.
Scott goes to the hospital to check on a SHIRTLESS Danny, who is more upset about the cops taking his fake ID than about being paralysed for a few hours. Scott asks if Danny did anything to anger Jackson. Danny tells him that everything was fine and that he was even doing Jackson a favour by recovering the video footage. The tablet with the footage is still in Danny’s car, which is probably still at the club. Danny won’t say what’s on the video, even in a matter of life and death. He will, however, if he can get his fake ID back.
Mama McCall stops Scott on his way out of the hospital. She got a calling saying Scott’s failing two classes. If he fails even one of his midterms, he’s going to be held back. Scott finally gets the gravity of his academic situation.
He bikes over to the club and finds that Danny’s car has been broken into and the tablet is missing.
Apparently when Stiles was driving away from the Preserve, he really just drove to another part of the Preserve (make-out point).
Scott, Stiles, and Allison brainstorm about who stole the tablet. Maybe it’s the friend that the Kanima is supposed to be seeking. Jackson listens in on the conversation with his super hearing and seems to finally believe that he might be the Kanima since everyone is talking so matter-of-factly about it.
Scott remembers what Stiles found online about the Kanima only going after murderers, which seems to fit. Scott and Allison were left alone in the Lahey house, Stiles was left alone in the mechanic’s garage. And maybe it wasn’t trying to attack Stiles and Derek in the pool—maybe it was just trying to keep them in. Even if that is all true, they still don’t know what’s going on with Jackson or why someone’s protecting him.
Scott is firmly against Stiles’s suggestion to kill Jackson, since Jackson reminds Scott of himself when he first became a werewolf. He had no idea what he was doing and nearly killed people.
SCOTT: I had someone to stop me. He has no one.
STILES: That’s his own fault.
SCOTT: It doesn’t matter. If we can save him, we should try.
Inside the car, Jackson sheds a solitary tear when he hears this.
Suddenly, the Kanima scales start to appear on his skin.
Stiles goes to check on Lydia, who still hasn’t forgiven him for ditching her to go on a perilous swimming excursion with Derek. Scott and Allison are left alone. Scott says he saw Chris and Gerard at the club the other night. Allison assures him that she wasn’t the one that told them; there are people monitoring cameras, even the ones in school. They have a quick chat and everything’s fine again.
Jackson’s Kanima scales are coming and going slowly and he’s still staring at them in shock.
Scott and Allison do some product placement for Pandora and then talk about their relationship. Scott is wondering about Lydia’s immunity and whether he could be cured of being a werewolf.
Allison mentions wanting to be with Scott forever and the music suddenly turns dark and scary.
Oh, it’s just because Jackson is finally going into full Kanima mode while Scott and Allison have sex in the back of Allison’s car, complete with SHIRTLES Scott and slow-mo kisses. Jackson breaks out of his handcuffs.
Allison and Scott fall asleep and wake up to find Stiles is back and Jackson’s broken out. If Jackson is going to kill someone, Allison needs to tell her father. Stiles needs to tell his dad as well, but doesn’t know how to make him believe. Scott turns on his wolf eyes. Probably a sure-fire way to convince him.
Allison arrives home to find that Lydia has been waiting in the dark for an hour for her.
Lydia needs someone to talk to and Allison doesn’t have time for her mentally unstable best friend who’s going through hell at the moment.
LYDIA: Why is everyone always telling me to wait? Why can’t anyone have right now available?
ALLISON: You can’t have everything right now. You know what I need? I need someone to translate five pages of Archaic Latin. Obviously that’s not going to happen any time soon.
LYDIA: I know Archaic Latin.
ALLISON: You know Archaic Latin?
LYDIA: I got bored with Classical Latin.
Stiles and Scott go to the Sheriff’s office and find Jackson and Mr Whittemore there already. And Jackson’s dad is a lawyer. Fantastic.
Lydia translates the Kanima text and points out that Ms Morrell (the guidance counsellor) made a mistake. The Kanima doesn’t seek a friend. It seeks a master. Which means someone’s not protecting Jackson; someone’s controlling him.
