We’re having a HAZY FLASHBACK to when Matt loaned Jackson his digital camera so Jackson could ‘document history’.
You might remember that Matt walked away from Jackson’s house and saw the torch light of Derek and Scott in the Lahey house because they temporarily forgot that they can see in the dark. What you won’t remember (because we didn’t see it before) is that Matt got in his car and immediately used an app to connect to his camera. He can see what the camera is filming. At first he thinks Jackson really is recording a sex tape, but then Jackson goes straight to sleep.
Matt stays outside the Whittemore house and dozes off. He wakes up just in time to watch as Jackson turns into the Kanima for the first time.
Matt is understandably confused and afraid until the Kanima rocks up at his window and wants to be friends. They put their hands together through the car window and their bond begins.
Through their bond, Matt sees the Kanima killing Mr Lahey and is pleased.
Scott and Stiles tell Papa Stilinski that Matt’s the real killer. They’ve drawn all over the yearbook to prove it.
Papa Stilinski isn’t buying it, even when Stiles says that Matt could’ve just made it look like Mr Harris was the murderer so he would take the fall. Mr Harris is still being charged with the murders, even though the rave promoter, Cara, wasn’t in his classes and doesn’t fit the pattern.
SCOTT: It’s really hard to explain how we know this but you’ve just got to trust us. We know it’s Matt.
STILES: He took Harris’s car, okay? Look, he knew that if a cop found tyre tracks at one of the murders and that enough of the victims were in Harris’s class, that they’d arrest him.
Papa Stilinski still wants a motive, which is exactly what the boys don’t have. They need to look at the evidence to help find the missing piece. Even though Papa Stilinski doesn’t work there anymore, people love him enough to let him in.
They go through the hospital evidence first. Since Matt had to kill Jessica, the new mother, by himself, someone had to have seen Matt at the hospital or he has to be on the hospital footage. They find Matt on the security footage but never get a clear shot of his face. They do find a shot of him talking to someone, though. And it’s Mama McCall.
Scott texts his mum a picture of Matt and asks if she remembers Matt’s face. She remembers stopping Matt because he was tracking mud in the hall. Scott hangs up. Papa Stilinski says they have shoe prints alongside the tyre tracks at the trailer site.
STILES: And if they match, that puts Matt at the scene of three murders; the trailer, the hospital, and the rave.
PAPA STILINSKI: Actually, four. A credit card receipt for an oil change was signed by Matt at the garage where the mechanic was killed.
PAPA STILINSKI: A couple of hours before you got there.
STILES: All right. If one’s an incident, two’s a coincidence, and three’s a pattern, what’s four?
PAPA STILINSKI: Four’s enough for a warrant.
VICTORY. Papa Stilinski tells Scott to call his mum back. If she can come down to the station and do an official ID, they can get a search warrant.
Stiles goes to the front desk to tell them to let in Mama McCall when she gets there. He finds the deputy from the front desk dead on the floor. Her gun is missing.
He turns around and comes face-to-face with the gun, which Matt is holding.
Derek is shirtless and seems to be in some kind of haze.
A sound wakes him and he finds Deaton kneeling over him in the Hale house. Deaton used a dog whistle to wake him up.
Deaton warns Derek that he’ll be weak for several hours. And Peter definitely did come back to life.
DEATON: Don’t worry, you’re still an Alpha … but, as usual, not a particularly competent one.
Deaton doesn’t know where Peter is. Derek wants to know why he’s here and why he’s helping.
DEATON: Helping your family actually used to be a pretty important part of my life. Helping you was a promise I made to your mother.
Apparently Derek’s sister mentioned that the Hale pack had a kind of advisor. And Deaton has some advice right now. Peter may be back, but he’ll be physically weak. He’ll rely on his intelligence and cunning. When he comes after Derek, Peter will say that he’s the only one who can help stop Gerard. Deaton warns Derek not to trust him. Derek says he doesn’t trust anyone, which Deaton also thinks is stupid. If he trusted more people, Derek might be a better Alpha. Deaton tells Derek to go and find Scott now. He thinks all this might be part of Gerard’s plan.
Back at the station, Matt shoves Stiles into the office with Papa Stilinski and Scott. Scott’s mum is on her way. Papa Stilinski tries to calm Matt down. Matt is not in the mood to calm down. Scott tries to dial a number while his phone’s in his pocket but Matt sees it.
Matt makes them all leave their phones on the desk. He has Stiles handcuff his dad in the cells and then takes Stiles and Scott down the hall, past a whole bunch of dead cops.
SCOTT: What, are you going to kill everyone in here?
MATT: No. That’s what Jackson’s for. I just think about killing them and he does it.
The Kanima’s arm snakes out to grab a still-breathing deputy and drag him out of sight.
At Casa Argent, Allison is despondent as Gerard tries to talk to her. He says that he has something from her mother that he wants to give her, but it can wait. Allison wants to see it now. Apparently Mama Argent wrote a suicide note to explain away the situation for the police. But she wrote another note meant just for Allison. Once Allison reads it, she has to destroy it. Apparently Mama Argent asked Gerard to read the note first and he initially refused. But she wanted Gerard’s thoughts.
GERARD: I don’t know what you’re going through. I wasn’t close to my own mother. But reading this made me sorry I hadn’t tried to be. Because if this were my mother—if these words were written for me—I don’t know how I could sit still until someone paid for her death. Any pity I’d had for Derek and his pack would be burned out by a white-hot desire for retribution or a kind of blood and destruction that would have Derek and his wolves howling not for mercy but for their own sweet deaths.
He hands over the note, his persuasive monologue complete.
Matt is making Scott and Stiles shred and delete all the files on the case that might point to his involvement. Now that they’re finished, Stiles wants to get his dad and go. Matt can enjoy the Kanima and his vengeance or whatever he wants.
Car headlights shine through the office windows. Mama McCall has arrived. Scott begs Matt to let his mum go. He’ll tell her to leave, that they didn’t find anything. Matt says that if Scott doesn’t go and get his mother, he’ll kill Stiles first and then Mama McCall.
Matt leads them to the door at gunpoint. Scott opens it to find Derek standing there.
SCOTT: Oh, thank God.
Nope. Thank Jackson for already paralysing Derek.
Allison burns the letter after reading it. Then she starts tearing apart her room, ridding it of any personal possessions and girly remnants. She strips off to her bra and shorts and then changes into hunting clothes and pulls out a giant crossbow.
Derek’s body is paralysed but his mouth isn’t and he’s perfectly capable of throwing shade at Matt. He’s not impressed that Matt is the one controlling the Kanima. Matt is not impressed with Derek being a big bad werewolf.
MATT: That’s right. I’ve learned a few things lately. Werewolves, hunters, Kanimas—it’s like a fricking Halloween party every full moon. Except for you, Stiles. What do you turn into?
STILES: Abominable snowman. But it’s more of like a winter time thing. You know, seasonal.
Jackson paralyses Stiles as well. He calls Matt a bitch and falls on top of Derek. Matt refuses to move Stiles off Derek and mocks him for being helpless. Derek throws more shade. Stiles calls Matt a bitch again.
Car headlights shine through the window again, which must mean that Mama McCall is actually here this time. Matt rips Stiles off Derek and puts his foot on Stiles’s throat, choking him. If Scott doesn’t bring in Mama McCall, Stiles dies. Scott agrees.
Mama McCall arrives and sees Matt holding a gun to Scott’s head.
Matt shoots Scott in the stomach; he said he wouldn’t hurt Mama McCall, but he didn’t say anything about not hurting Scott. Papa Stilinski calls out from the holding cells, wanting to know who was shot. Mama McCall tries to help her son but Matt points the gun at her. Papa Stilinski yells from the holding cells again and Matt starts getting really angry. He locks Mama McCall in one of the cells. She keeps begging to help Scott. Matt finds it amusing that she has no idea about her son’s magic powers. Matt tells her that if she keeps talking, he’ll put the next bullet through Scott’s head.
Matt takes Scott back to the front room. He doesn’t care that the evidence is gone. Matt wants the bestiary. Well, tough luck. The book is Gerard’s. Matt needs answers from the book. He’s slowly starting to get Kanima scales of his own and he’s not happy with his new look.
Allison shows her dad a text from Scott’s phone. Matt wants the bestiary brought to the sheriff’s station. Allison knows it’s not Scott; he wouldn’t have texted her and he would never have mentioned Derek. Chris thinks that it must be from the Kanima and the one controlling him.
They pull out blueprints to the sheriff’s station and start making plans to invade. They assume that all the night staff are dead or paralysed. Gerard suggests Allison should be setting the rules, since she’s now the leading matriarch. Chris says Allison isn’t ready at her age.
GERARD: She’s almost 18. She knows there’s a difference between revenge and retribution. Don’t you, Allison? Make the decision from a vantage point of strategy over emotion and we’ll follow your lead.
ALLISON: I want Derek dead.
CHRIS: What about Scott?
ALLISON: Scott’s not the one who forced my mother to kill herself.
Gerard is loving this but Chris warns Allison that Scott isn’t an innocent bystander and she can’t pick and choose. Maybe not, but Allison can prioritise. And her priority is to kill Derek. Chris asks about the rest of Derek’s pack.
ALLISON: If they try and protect him then we kill them. All of them.
Jackson guards Stiles and Derek, who are still in Paralysis Town.
Stiles asks Derek if he knows what’s happening to Matt. Derek says it’s because Matt broke the rules and the universe is balancing things out. Matt’s using Jackson to kill people who don’t deserve it and Matt’s killing people himself. If you break the rules of the Kanima, you become the Kanima.
It’s unlikely that Matt will believe them so when he reads the bestiary and finds out what’s happening, he’s going to kill everyone. Derek tries to push the toxin out of his body faster by triggering the healing process. He grows his werewolf claws and manages to sink them into his leg.
Scott is still bleeding and Matt has no sympathy because Scott will eventually heal. His biggest problem will be explaining it away. Scott tries to figure out how Matt died and realises that he must have drowned. That would explain his fear of water.
Once upon a time, the swim team won State and Mr Lahey let a bunch of 17-year-olds come over to have a celebratory drink. Matt was over at Isaac’s place, trading comic books. Matt heard the party going on outside and saw everyone jumping in the pool. Then Isaac’s brother, Camden, grabbed Matt and threw him in the pool. Matt yelled that he couldn’t swim but nobody listened. Matt went under and swallowed water. He could see people in the water, making out or grabbing each other, and no one paid any attention to Matt drowning. When Matt came to, he was lying by the pool with Mr Lahey above him.
MR LAHEY: You tell no one. This—this is your fault. You don’t know how to swim? What little bastard doesn’t know how to swim? You say nothing. You tell no one. No one.
Matt never told anyone about it. He would wake up gasping, thinking he was drowning, and his parents thought he just had asthma. He would see the swim team at school and they would ignore him.
MATT: You know about that little white light that they talk about? You see when you die? Well, I didn’t see anything. Just darkness. Everything was dark. But then—then came the Argent’s funeral and everything changed.
While Matt was taking some creepy stalker photos of Allison at Kate’s funeral, Mr Lahey popped up in one of Matt’s photos. Matt was consumed by rage and wanted to see Lahey dead. The next day, he was dead.
Matt tries to do a Greek mythology analogy but Scott is not a Greek mythology buff.
Matt has to explain to him about the Furies and how they were deities of vengeance. If there was a crime that had gone unpunished, the Furies did the punishing. Jackson is Matt’s Fury.
When Matt saw Jackson in Kanima-form the next night, he realised that the bond was complete; Jackson had already killed Lahey and he could do it again. So Matt went to the mechanic’s garage. The mechanic didn’t recognise him. Matt took a photo of him. Soon, the mechanic was dead. Matt took photos and Jackson took lives.
Derek’s attempts to push the venom out of his system aren’t working as well as he thinks. He can move his toes, but so can Stiles. They’re getting motion back at the same rate.
All of a sudden, the lights go out and sirens start wailing. Matt starts yelling at Scott and that’s when the WEREWOLF HUNTERS open fire through a window. Scott and Matt duck for cover.
Outside, Gerard quotes Shakespeare to show that he’s a poetic killer.
They set off smoke bombs. Scott runs out of the smoke and body slams Jackson. He goes to Derek and Stiles. Derek’s moving a bit faster and he tells Scott to take Stiles. Scott drags Stiles down the hall, locking doors behind him. Jackson follows, kicking down every door he comes across.
Chris and Allison walk in, ready to kill people.
They hear Sheriff yelling in the holding cells as he tries to break his handcuffs. Derek goes into Alpha mode. Jackson is ready to go full Kanima.
Scott sets Stiles down and goes back to help fight. Or do something. I assume he’s going back to fight. Anyway, he runs into Allison. She demands to know where Derek is. If Scott doesn’t tell her, then he needs to get out of her way. Scott doesn’t know that Allison’s mother is dead and he can’t understand what’s wrong with her. She tells him to stay out of her way.
Chris and Allison make hand signals at each other in the smoke as they look for Derek or the Kanima or really just anyone. Well, they found the Kanima in the evidence locker. It jumps down on Chris and Allison shoots it in the head with an arrow. The Kanima just pulls it out of its fucking head and goes after her.
Allison runs into the garage, dropping her crossbow and pulling out a knife instead. The Kanima follows her inside and she hides under a desk. Somehow she gets out and jumps across cars to stab the Kanima in the neck. It grabs her around the throat and paralyses her.
Matt shows up to gloat over Allison’s predicament.
MATT: You should have given me a chance. You know how I said I’m not the kind of guy who would say something like, ‘If I can’t have her, no one can’? It’s not totally true. Because, Allison, if I can’t have you, no one can.
He hears a noise and goes to investigate, leaving Allison on the ground. Chris arrives and picks Allison up so he can carry her away.
In the holding cells, Papa Stilinski has finally managed to break his hand cuffs off the wall while Mama McCall cheered him on. Stiles is trying to crawl towards them. Matt shows up and slams the butt of his gun into Papa Stilinski’s head, knocking him out.
Outside, Gerard chokes on the smoke and takes his special foreshadowing pills instead of just walking away from the smoke. He sees a figure in the shadows. I’m not sure but to me, it looks like Peter Hale.
Mama McCall pleads with Matt to let her see Scott so she can take a look at his bullet wound. Matt is done with her being totally clueless. Derek is done with being paralysed. He walks in in Alpha mode and looks about to take down Matt.
The Kanima shows up, thanks to their special mental bond, and now Derek has got to fight the lizard instead. Mama McCall is probably glad right now that she’s locked in a cell and separated from these creatures. Stiles watches from his position on the ground, looking pretty helpless.
The Kanima knocks Derek to the ground and then climbs around on Mama McCall’s cell bars, trying to get to her/show her some sick dance moves.
Scott shows up in wolf mode and claws him in the back, standing protectively in front of his mother.
Derek gets back up and chases the Kanima out of the room. Mama McCall sees Scott’s werewolf face and she is not totally psyched about him looking like that. She backs away from him, terrified.
Scott is upset.
He runs away and bumps into Gerard in the hallway.
SCOTT: What are you doing here? It wasn’t supposed to happen like this.
GERARD: Trust me, I’m aware of that.
SCOTT: I’ve done everything that you’ve asked of me. I’m part of Derek’s pack, I’ve given you all the information that you wanted, I told you Matt was controlling Jackson—
GERARD: And leave him to us. Help your friends. Leave Matt and Jackson to me. Deal with your mother. Go.
Scott sees Gerard’s foreshadowing pillbox on the ground and hands it back to him. Then he continues running down the hallway, past where Derek stands ominously in the shadows, having heard the whole exchange.
Matt runs out of the Sheriff’s station and ditches the gun. He runs across a bridge and only stops when he’s caught in a car’s headlights. Gerard’s car. Gerard throws him down the hill. Matt lands near the water. Gerard follows him and holds Matt under, drowning him. Matt has flashbacks of the first time he drowned but there’s no coming back this time.
Gerard walks back up the hill. Peter Hale watches from atop the bridge, looking pleased. The Kanima watches from under the bridge, looking Kanima.
GERARD: No longer afraid of the water? You don’t have to be afraid of anything, my friend. Especially me.
Gerard takes off his glove and he and the Kanima do a soft high-five to cement their new bond.
Peter is looking less pleased now that Gerard has a pet lizard murderer.
