Jackson is loaded into an ambulance in a body bag. There’s something really weird dripping from the body bag. Is that venom?
Mama McCall insists on riding with the ambulance, saying that she’ll need to give a statement.
Stiles is escorted/thrown down some stairs and into the basement of Casa Argent by an unknown WEREWOLF HUNTER. He finds the light switch and sees Erica and Boyd gagged and hanging from the roof.
Sheriff is worried sick about Stiles and asks Scott and Isaac to let him know if they see him. Scott says that Stiles is probably just freaked out from all the attention but even Sheriff isn’t buying that right now.
Coach tells Scott that they need him on the team and he needs to step it up with his academics so he doesn’t get benched next season.
COACH: I know I yell a lot but it’s not like I hate you guys. Well, I kinda hate Greenberg but, you know, that’s different. It’s Greenberg.
With Coach gone, Isaac and Scott are alone. Scott is free to rip Stiles’s locker off the hinges and grab some of Stiles’s clothes. Scott and Isaac are going to track Stiles by scent.
Derek arrives ominously. He needs to talk and Peter is with him.
In the Argent basement, Stiles tries to undo the ropes around Erica’s wrists but they’re electrified. Gerard arrives and says that there’s no point in torturing Erica and Boyd because they won’t give Derek up; the instinct to protect their Alpha is too strong.
STILES: So what are you doing with me? Because Scott can find me, all right? He knows my scent. It’s pungent. You know, it’s more like a stench. He could find me even if I was buried at the bottom of the sewer, covered in faecal matter and urine.
Gerard says that he’s going to beat Stiles to a bloody pulp. Stiles thinks he could take a 90-year-old in a fight and is proven wrong when Gerard bitch slaps him. Stiles falls to the floor. Erica and Boyd close their eyes and turn away as Gerard continues beating Stiles.
Scott wants to know what Peter is doing alive. Derek wants to know why Scott was talking to Gerard at the sheriff’s station. Scott says he was trying to protect his mother and Peter makes a comment about Mama McCall being gorgeous that no one appreciates. Isaac has no idea who Peter is and needs a catch-up.
SCOTT: That’s Peter. Derek’s uncle. A little while back, he tried to kill us all and then we set him on fire and Derek slashed his throat.
Derek says Peter is going to help them stop Jackson and maybe even save him. Not really necessary, since Jackson’s now dead. For a second, Peter has outlived his usefulness. Then he comes back and says that they need to figure out why Gerard wanted Jackson dead. And soon.
Chris finds Allison in her room with Gerard. Everyone except Chris seems cool with werewolves being electrocuted in the basement.
Chris wants to know what happened about the lacrosse game.
GERARD: Didn’t you hear? We won.
CHRIS: I meant Jackson.
GERARD: So did I.
Gerard leaves. Chris asks Allison to let him and the other WEREWOLF HUNTERS deal with this situation. But the fact that one of her friends is dead is only more fuel to Allison’s Derek hate-fire. If Derek hadn’t bitten him, Jackson would never have become the Kanima. Chris asks what happens to Scott if he gets caught in the cross-fire; he doesn’t really care about Scott but he cares about Allison. Allison is doing exactly what her dad wanted so she doesn’t see the problem.
CHRIS: No, Allison. You’re doing exactly what he wants. We all are.
Allison wants to go to bed. She reminds her dad that he owes her a new bow. Chris breaks the crossbow on Allison’s desk. He’ll owe her one of those as well, but at least she won’t be using it.
Mama McCall goes to check on Jackson’s body in the morgue. She sees the weird liquid stuff dripping out of it and grabs a sample. She unzips the body bag.
Sheriff is in Stiles’s room, looking for clues, when Stiles returns, bruised and bloody.
He tells his dad that he was beat up by some sore losers from the other team and says he couldn’t see his attackers. Sheriff wants to pistol-whip whoever did this. He pulls Stiles in for a hug and I think everyone’s crying and maybe I am as well. A little bit. Shut up, I love these two.
Derek, Peter, Isaac, and Scott go back to the Hale house. Scott gets a message saying that Stiles is okay. Peter goes to a sneaky hidey-hole under a stair and pulls out his dusty laptop. The Argents aren’t the only ones that keep records.
Scott gets a call from his mum. She tells him he needs to see what’s happening to Jackson. From what I can tell, he’s slowly being encased in a jelly cocoon.
Lydia shows up at Stiles’s bedroom door, looking on the verge of tears. She asks about his bruises and he tells her it’s nothing. Lydia starts crying. They won’t let her see Jackson and she can’t give him back his key. (I guess he dropped it last time she gave it back because he was busy turning into a Kanima?)
Scott and Isaac go to inspect Jackson’s cocoon. Whatever it is, it doesn’t look good.
Jackson’s head twitches and everyone backs up. Scott, too scared to touch it, asks his mum to zip up the body bag. Mama McCall does, despite Jackson growling and showing rows of razor-sharp teeth. At least now they can’t see whatever’s going on with his face.
Chris visits Boyd and Erica to tell them about WEREWOLF HUNTER torturing techniques but he doesn’t use any on them. He just walks away.
Stiles hands Lydia a roll of toilet paper in lieu of tissues.
Stiles’s phone keeps buzzing and Lydia picks it up, telling him he has 17 missed messages from Scott. Stiles isn’t ready to answer just yet.
Lydia notices that Stiles has a stash of women’s jewellery in the corner of his bedroom. Stiles admits that he bought it for Lydia’s birthday.
STILES: I kind of didn’t know what to get you so I just bought you, like, a bunch of stuff. Like, a lot of stuff. You know, I was going to return anything that I didn’t give you.
He even bought a flat-screen TV. Stiles’s phone goes off again. Lydia still has it in her hand and tells him he’s going to want to read this message.
Scott calls Derek to fill him in on Jackson’s cocoon. Peter checks his computer and finds that Jackson’s lizard guise is just the Kanima’s Beta shape. It can turn into something much bigger, scarier, and with added wings.
Jackson’s now doing a dance inside his body bag and Derek tells Scott to bring Jackson to them.
PETER: Look, someone made an animation of it. Maybe it’s less frightening if we—
The animation lets out a terrifying screech and Peter slams the laptop closed. They’re going to meet Scott halfway.
Gerard wakes up Allison and tells her that it’s starting.
Scott and Isaac carry Jackson in his body bag out of the hospital, trying to be stealthy. Scott accidentally drops whatever end he’s carrying. The head, probably. Chris drives up and stares at them.
Derek is rushing to meet Scott and Isaac. Peter tells him they’re going too fast and this must be what Gerard wants. Derek doesn’t care; if he gets the chance to kill Jackson, he’ll take it.
Stiles asks Lydia how much she knows about ‘this stuff’, by which I assume he means anything supernatural. Lydia says she only knows pieces and half of it’s like a dream. But she doesn’t care how bad things are if there’s a way she can help Jackson.
STILES: You see, that’s the problem. You don’t care about getting hurt. But you know how I’ll feel? I’ll be devastated. And if you die, I will literally go out of my freaking mind. You see, death doesn’t happen to you, Lydia. It happens to everyone around you, okay? To all the people left standing at your funeral, trying to figure out how to live the rest of their lives now without you in it. And look at my face. Come on, you actually think this was meant to hurt me?
Lydia backs up in fear and Stiles apologises for scaring her. Lydia leaves, saying that she’ll find Jackson herself.
Chris is alone and suddenly on a different side. He says that he and Scott have a common enemy but it’s not Jackson. Chris tells Scott that Gerard has twisted his way into Allison’s head, the same way he did with Kate. Both Chris and Scott are losing her. He can trust Scott to fix this but he can’t let Scott and Isaac go; his car is faster. They jump in Chris’s truck and drive off.
Stiles sits in his room, moping. Sheriff comes in and asks him what the deal is with Lydia. Stiles says that she’s in love with someone else. Sheriff tries to cheer Stiles up. He might be shaken about being beaten up and Jackson dying but he was amazing in the lacrosse game and Sheriff is so proud. He tells Stiles that he was a hero. Stiles can’t accept that.
Chris, Isaac, and Scott arrive at the meeting place. Derek arrives late because he has to wolf-run in and do a flip to make a dramatic entrance. Someone needs to tell Derek that the wolf-run is not impressive. It looks weird.
Chris makes it clear that he’s here for Jackson, not Derek. They take Jackson inside and Scott notices that Peter and Lydia aren’t here yet. That’s because Peter is hiding behind a pillar and caressing it.
Scott reminds Derek that they were supposed to save Jackson. Derek tells him they’re past that. Gerard controls Jackson and has turned him into his personal guard dog. He’s set everything in motion so Jackson could get bigger and more powerful. Chris refuses to believe it, saying that his father would never let a rabid dog live.
Gerard appears to add his two cents.
GERARD: Of course not. Anything that dangerous, that out of control, is better off dead.
Derek tries to slice Jackson with his claws but suddenly Jackson’s awake. He claws Derek in the chest and sends him flying across the room. Chris draws his gun and everyone else stands there in shock.
Gerard thanks Scott for walking straight into his trap. He brought Jackson to Derek to be saved. In doing so, he brought Derek to Gerard. An arrow flies at Scott’s head and he ducks. Allison’s arrow hits Isaac in the shoulder instead and Scott drags Isaac out of the way. Chris starts shooting Jackson, who is transforming into the Kanima and uses his tail to take away Chris’s gun. Chris draws a knife and the Kanima sends him flying.
Derek parkours back into the ring.
Isaac (now arrow-free) and Scott are all wolfed up and ready to fight to an extended version of the title sequence song. Bitchin’.
Peter watches from his corner, doing nothing to help anyone. The werewolves all politely wait their turn to fight the Kanima so that he’s not overwhelmed by sheer force. Derek gets dispatched with another claw swipe to the chest. Apparently the paralysis is selective but this time it’s doing its job.
Allison corners Isaac and attacks him viciously with her knives, then goes in to kill Derek.
Scott calls out to her. Allison is disarmed by the Kanima, who then grabs her by the throat. Gerard tells her to wait.
Apparently this whole time, Gerard has been dying from cancer. Scott smelled it that time Gerard stabbed him in the stomach outside the hospital. There’s no cure for cancer yet—nothing except the bite of an Alpha. Chris and Allison are not taking this turn of events well and the Kanima is choking Allison now.
CHRIS: You’ll kill her too?
GERARD: When it comes to survival, I’d kill my own son.
Looks like the unnamed favour Gerard wanted from Scott was to make sure Derek bit him. Scott starts dragging Derek over to Gerard. Derek tells Scott that once Gerard is bitten, he’ll kill Derek and become an Alpha.
GERARD: That’s true. But I think he knows that already. Don’t you, Scott? He knows that the ultimate prize is Allison. Do this small task for me and they can be together. You are the only piece that doesn’t fit, Derek. And in case you haven’t learned yet, there is just no competing with young love.
Scott apologises and holds Derek’s mouth open so that Gerard can be bitten.
Gerard holds his arm up in victory but it’s not looking so victorious. There’s black blood coming out of his arm.
SCOTT: Everyone said Gerard always had a plan. I had a plan too.
Gerard immediately pulls out his foreshadowing pills and starts getting angry at them. Apparently when Scott handed back Gerard’s pillbox at the sheriff’s station, it was a plant. The pills were actually filled with mountain ash from Deaton. And we all know that mountain ash does not go well with werewolves.
Black blood starts dripping from every orifice in Gerard’s face.
Then he starts vomiting up the stuff and everyone is disgusted. Gerard drops to the ground.
DEREK: Why didn’t you tell me?
SCOTT: Because you might be an Alpha but you’re not mine.
Okay, Gerard isn’t dead. And he’s still in charge of the Kanima. He tells it to kill everyone and then collapses.
Maybe he’s dead this time. Or just unconscious.
Either way, the Kanima seems momentarily confused and doesn’t immediately go about fulfilling his master’s wishes. Allison elbows the Kanima in the face and then Stiles drives his Jeep through a wall and slams into the Kanima. Lydia is with him.
The Kanima jumps on the hood of the Jeep and Lydia and Stiles jump out of it. Stiles immediately runs away but Lydia stands her ground, addressing the Kanima as Jackson.
The Kanima looks ready to slash her throat. Stiles lunges forward to help but the Kanima stops. Lydia is holding up Jackson’s house key.
Cue flashback to Jackson and Lydia finishing up with sexy times one night. Jackson is SHIRTLESS. He grabs a key from his bedside table and gives it to Lydia as they snuggle.
There are no ‘I love you’s exchanged and it almost seems like Jackson just wants Lydia to be more accessible for sex. But they both seemed happy with the situation.
And it’s enough to start bringing Jackson out of Kanima mode.
He takes the key from Lydia and starts walking backwards, opening his arms as if he’s ready for Derek to kill him. Finally, Peter starts jumping out of his hiding place. Derek stabs Jackson in the stomach, Peter stabs him in the back. They lift him off the ground and Jackson starts choking.
They let him go and Lydia goes to stop him from collapsing.
JACKSON: Lydia, do you still—
LYDIA: I do. I do still love you. I do. I do still love you. I do.
Jackson falls into her arms as Lydia cries. The key falls to the ground. Allison takes Scott’s hand and everyone stands around and watches while Lydia sobs over the dead body of her ex-boyfriend, saying over and over again that she still loves him.
Lydia lays Jackson back on the ground. The last of the Kanima scales disappear from his face.
Allison notices that Gerard’s missing. So he wasn’t dead after all.
Lydia stands up, still sobbing. Stiles goes forward to comfort her but is stopped when he sees Jackson’s claws scratch the ground. Jackson is breathing. He opens his eyes. They’re bright blue.
Jackson has a moment in front of the headlights of Stiles’s car that might do Sailor Moon proud.
He throws his head back and roars. Finally, he’s a werewolf. And he’s fully healed.
Lydia runs into his arms as he turns human again and now everyone’s watching a happy scene instead of a death scene.
Stiles looks like he’s been crying a bit and Scott finally gets a chance to look at him. Stiles shrugs off the bruises on his cheek, saying that he scratched himself.
Back at Casa Argent, Allison holds Scott’s hand and apologises to him for the things she’s said and done recently, and for what she has to do now. Scott tells her it’s okay.
ALLISON: Scott, I’m trying to break up with you.
SCOTT: I know. And it’s okay.
ALLISON: How is that okay?
SCOTT: Because I can wait.
ALLISON: I can’t make you wait for me. I’m not going to do that.
SCOTT: You don’t have to. Because I know we’re going to be together.
ALLISON: There’s no such thing as fate.
SCOTT: There’s no such thing as werewolves.
Scott brushes away Allison’s tears and they have one last kiss. Scott leaves and Allison instantly looks like she regrets her decision.
Chris walks in as Scott walks out. He takes Scott’s place beside Allison and she curls up to cry.
Erica and Boyd run through the woods again and stop to catch their breath. Suddenly, they’re surrounded by a bunch of werewolves who pull out their claws. You guys just cannot catch a break.
Deaton finds a spatter of black blood and Ms Morrell shows up wearing some killer high heels.
MS MORRELL: You’re not planning on getting your hands dirty, are you?
DEATON: I do what I have to.
MS MORRELL: Good. I never liked you being retired anyway.
DEATON: Whoever said I was retired?
They walk past a pool of black blood together, having a little chuckle at the fact that Deaton put some mountain ash in Gerard’s pills.
Derek, Peter, and Isaac go to look at the Hale house in daylight so they can be reminded how decrepit it looks. Peter says that Derek hasn’t told Isaac everything. There was a reason Derek was in such a hurry to build his pack and strengthen his power and number; when there’s a new Alpha, people take notice.
Isaac wants to know what ‘this’ is. He points at something we can’t see.
DEREK: It’s their symbol. And it means they’re coming.
‘They’ are a whole pack of Alphas.
PETER: And they’re not coming. They’re already here.
We finally get to see the funky drawing on Derek’s door. It kind of looks like a lazy swastika.
Stiles and Scott drive over to the lacrosse field to practise and discuss their love lives.
STILES: So you really think she’s going to come back to you?
SCOTT: Yeah, I know she is.
What about if the two of you just got back together? Allison is grieving her mother’s death and trying to sort out her life. She doesn’t need to come crawling back from some shameful behaviour or anything. Fuck.
Meanwhile, Stiles’s 10-year plan to make Lydia fall in love with him might have to stretch to 15 years but he hasn’t given up. Scott suggests that Stiles just ask Lydia out but the idea is laughable.
Scott realises that he’s back where he started; no lacrosse, no popularity, no girlfriend.
STILES: Dude, you’ve still got me.
SCOTT: I had you before.
STILES: Yeah, and you still got me, okay? Life fulfilled.
Stiles gets ready to shoot some goals.
Scott isn’t supposed to use any of his wolf powers to give him an unfair advantage when he’s blocking Stiles’s goals. He can’t help himself, though. He looks up with glowing eyeballs just as Stiles takes his first shot.
STILES: I SAID NO WOLF POWERS.
