PAINT THE TOWN READ: The Real Mother Goose in the Old Granary Burial Ground in Boston, Massachusetts

IMG_4899

I had planned to have covers for every Paint the Town Read book. But, along the way, I found a few things I wasn’t expecting.

IMG_4984While following the Freedom Trail in Boston, Massachusetts, we stopped at the Old Granary Burial Ground and I spotted this headstone. It’s a bit hard to read since a lot of the words have faded with time but it’s the grave of Mary Goose, who Boston has claimed as their own Mother Goose.

Some legends of Mother Goose predate her birth, so it’s unlikely that Mary was actually the real Mother Goose. But Boston has adopted her as such, and many who spot her in the Old Granary Burial Ground are delighted to adopt her as well. You can read more about Mary Goose’s unlikely claim to the name of Mother Goose here.
