The largest second-hand book sale event IN THE WORLD is back in Brisbane this long weekend!
Each year, large amounts of books are donated to Lifeline Shops. Instead of simply dumping or recycling what they can’t stock, Lifeline started organising Bookfests to help sell off the books. Lifeline Bookfests appear all around Queensland in Bundaberg, the Sunshine Coast, the Gold Coast, Ipswich, Mackay, Maryborough, Rockhampton, and Brisbane.
You can roam through the $1 section, the $2.50 section, and the High Quality (prices as marked) section to find some hidden treasures. Each section divides books into categories and genres.
Brisbane Lifeline Bookfest is on 6-9 June 2015 (the Queen’s Birthday long weekend) at Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre (corner of Merivale Street and Glenelg St, South Brisbane QLD). Doors are open from 8.30am to 7pm Saturday-Monday and 9.30am to 4pm on Tuesday. Bookfest is staffed by volunteers and entry to the event is free. Not only are those tables piled high with books, there are more pallets waiting to be unpacked to provide fresh selections every day.
All funds raised go to supporting UnitingCare Community and Lifeline’s community services. These services include a 24-hour Crisis Support Line, suicide bereavement and prevention support, and a disaster recovery program called Community Recovery. All of these services rely on the funds raised by Lifeline Shops in Queensland, where you can buy donated items including clothing, books, and furniture. Donations are also a big part of helping Lifeline continue these programs. You can make a donation online to help out.
You can also like Lifeline Bookfest on Facebook and receive updates about all the Bookfests held throughout Queensland.
I’ll be in Townsville until Sunday night but I’m hoping to go on Monday; Bookfest is my happy place.
