The Queen Victoria Women’s Centre now occupies the same space that was once home to the Queen Victoria Memorial Hospital, one of the filming locations for Stanley Kramer’s film adaptation of On the Beach. In the scene pictured, citizens of Melbourne line up to receive their poison pills—the alternative to a slow, painful death from radiation poisoning.
Backing onto the QV shopping centre is the original building of the Queen Victoria Hospital, which was one of only three hospitals in the world founded, managed, and staffed exclusively by women, for women. Now home to the Queen Victoria Women’s Centre, it offers an impressive and diverse range of women’s organisations and programs. A full list of the resident organisations can be found here.
