LITERARY LOCATION: Readings at the State Library of Victoria in Melbourne, Victoria

This boutique branch of Readings in Palmer Hall is the first permanent commercial bookshop permitted to be established in the State Library of Victoria.

Readings at the State Library is home to a handsome collection of Penguin books, as well as some other beautiful editions. I tried very hard not to weep over the beauty of a copy of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy I found tucked away in one of the corners.

Paying homage to its location, this branch of Readings has its own ‘State Library Publications’ corner for browsing.

Catering to students, travellers, and library regulars, Readings at the State Library of Victoria is ideally positioned in Palmer Hall, just off the library’s main entrance. If you’re not drunk on beautiful books by the time you leave the State Library, a side trip to Readings may tip you over the edge.

Founded in 1969 by Ross Reading and his partners Dot and Peter Reid, Readings is a small chain of independent bookstores in Melbourne. While the branch at the State Library is a pint-sized store, other larger Readings stores can be found at in Carlton, Hawthorn, St Kilda, and Malvern.

  1. Not gonna lie, I would probably buy everything in there just because it has my name on it. It is absolutely beautiful, though. So jealous you get to look at that. The sign alone is so visually appealingggggg
