If you’ve been following this blog for more than five seconds, you’re probably aware that I’ve been absolutely hopeless at updating it this year. Mostly because of who I am as a person, but also because of various life reasons. But I haven’t COMPLETELY fallen off the face of the Earth. I’m still quite active on Instagram and I have a bunch of reviews drafted, which will start going up next week.
DAY 1: CHILDHOOD
1 May 2016. #AmpersandMay16 Day 1: Childhood. I found this book while I was unpacking and noticed a note on the inside cover: To Sarah, On the occasion of your birth. Well, GEE WHIZ. I’ve actually had this book for longer than I can remember. This little nursery rhyme (which is actually a poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow) followed me around as a child. I was that little girl who had a little curl right in the middle of her forehead. And since I ended up having red hair and pulling faces just like this illustration, this book was basically a self-fulfilling prophecy. What's the first book you remember reading as a child? I know there were many more before this but my first proper memory is me reading something (I'm almost certain it was Snow White) and making up a song to go along with the prose.
DAY 2: BATTLE
2 May 2016. #AmpersandMay16 Day 2: Battle. It’s the anniversary of the Battle of Hogwarts and I am still not over it. I know there are still a few of you out there who haven’t read the Harry Potter books so I won’t spoil it by flailing about the characters that died but it was BRUTAL. Did you hear that the script for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will be published later this year? I know I’m going to buy it but I’m on the fence about the notion. It kind of undercuts the uniqueness of Cursed Child’s script being released. I change my mind about this every day. Tomorrow I’ll be like ‘HECK YEAH, SCRIPT EVERYTHING.’ How do you feel about it? These super awesome Hogwarts house brooches are from @HungryDesigns. Decisions are for the weak. BUY ALL THE HOUSES.
DAY 3: DEDICATION
3 May 2016. #AmpersandMay16 Day 3: Dedication. To Beatrice – darling, dearest, dead. I love the dedications in A Series of Unfortunate Events. In truth, I think that was one of the things I most looked forward to whenever a new book was released. Definitely need to reread these one day—I remember the basics but I feel like there are a lot of hilarious things that I’ve totally forgotten. Do you read the dedication and acknowledgements in your books? I love finding out who’s made the journey possible for an author.
DAY 4: SCI-FI
4 May 2016. #AmpersandMay16 Day 4: Sci-Fi. MAY THE FOURTH BE WITH YOU. Who else freaking loved the Jedi Apprentice books? They were so rad I can still hardly deal. My favourite was definitely The Fight for Truth, probably because of Siri (an actual human, not your phone). I wanted to be a Jedi apprentice just like her. What awesome book character inspired you as a kid?
DAY 5: TOP FIVE
5 May 2016. #AmpersandMay16 Day 5: Top Five. Here’s my chance to do the #Top5MaleCharacters tag from @the_unbecoming0fa_fangirl! I choooooooooooooooooooooose: Tyrion Lannister for his wit and wisdom; Harry Potter because his story gave me a world that I’ll always cherish; Atticus Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird for his moral code; Mr Darcy from Pride and Prejudice for his grumpy as heck but totally swoon-worthy personality; and Peeta Mellark from The Hunger Games just because of reasons. Every time I revisit the books or movies, I come away with a deeper appreciation for Peeta. Who are some of your favourite male characters?
DAY 6: HORRIBLE COVERS
6 May 2016. #AmpersandMay16 Day 6: Horrible Covers. I actually found this cover really intriguing. After reading (and loving) a multitude of Christopher Pike books when I was younger, I was super excited to read this one. But the book was nowhere near as ‘rip your face off and reveal the monster underneath’ as the cover implied. It was actually kind of lacklustre. Have you ever been super disappointed in a book by one of your favourite authors?
DAY 7: COMIC
7 May 2016. #AmpersandMay16 Day 7: Comic. Happy #FreeComicBookDay! And yay for everyone going to see Captain America: Civil War! I saw it last week at a media preview and it was AWESOME. Full of action and great one-liners and, of course, many glorious superheroes in tight-fitting outfits. Well done, costume department. Well done. Who's already seen Civil War? Did you love it?
